Dream

The Chan of Dreams, Morphia, is an ethereal Chan part of the Celestial pantheon. She is recognized as a deity and by many sects to be the most significant of all the Celestial Chans, to the point of inspiring a religion dedicated to her known as Somnism. The most dedicated of the Somnari, known as Seers, were able to receive visions of the past and future, and it was through them that her influence was felt most strongly during this era.

According to scripture, Morphia, alongside her sister Phoebe, was born from the clouds and stars by Allmother Genetrix's hand. In contrast to her sibling, Morphia is the kinder of the two, with a much softer appearance. She is described with long golden hair; the fluffy ears, horizontal pupils and rounded, short horns of a sheep; and what we may traditionally recognize as pajamas, a loose long-sleeved shirt and trousers, with a nightcap atop.

As her essence is that of dreams, she is able to turn them into a special kind of dust- golden sleepdust. This sleepdust is used to spread dreams among the mortal realm by beings called Onyrid. The Onyrid are a demi-celestial race, and those created by Morphia take on a gentle, friendly appearance, with a natural attraction to healthier minds. A sheep-like being named Topple, the first Onyrid created by Morphia, is known for being her most trusted envoy.

Morphia has been depicted as wielding two powerful artifacts- the cosmic cape, and a staff. The cosmic cape is said to have been a gift from the Allmother Genetrix when Morphia was an infant, who was unable to sleep until gifted the then-blanket to soothe her wailing. In adolescence, it became a tool to allow her to fly and travel quickly. She is later known to be gifted the staff by one of her most loyal and dedicated Seers of the Somnari, a Talisman-Chan.

Known as one of the first daughters of Allmother Genetrix, Morphia is said to also be the only one of the Celestials to have spoken to her on several accounts, giving her a much more significant role within the pantheon. In ancient texts, this caused her to catch the ire of Phoebe. The friction increased until an argument began between the two over their importance within the pantheon. This argument became so heated and volatile, they decided never to speak again.

This led to problems for those in the mortal realm. If they did not pray to either Morphia or Phoebe, they received no dreams, which meant no sleep. Many came to the conclusion that Morphia was the obvious choice- who would willingly choose to be plagued with nightmares? So it was then that much of the world found themselves dreaming only of pleasant fantasies and fancies.

What ended up was an even greater issue on top of the initial one. Dreaming of such intoxicating unrealities night after night, people grew unmotivated, wanting only to continue their dreams. As reality slowly began to falter, people reassured themselves that their lives would become wonderful in time, just as their dreams were. Weak and distracted, those who prayed to Phoebe - driven by the effects of fear and dread- began conquering cities and villages with their wild, feral temperaments.

Bloodshed and strife persisted. Despite praying to the same deity, the followers of Phoebe betrayed and backstabbed one another, so fearful were they they found no peace even among their peers. This warring came to a point where even the chaos could not be ignored by Morphia or Phoebe, and finding themselves equals at last, reconciled their differences. A healthy mind, of course, required both dreams and nightmares to thrive.

While Morphia held considerable influence within this earliest era, it had begun to wane once it ended. In the modern day, Morphia is known best as a character within fairytales and fables, despite it being general knowledge that she does exist. Relegated to becoming equals with fraudulent fortune-tellers, today's Seers are incredibly rare- if any are to exist at all, anymore.

Phoebe, the Chan of Nightmares, is Morphia's fraternal twin sister. The younger between them, Phoebe has held contempt for Morphia due to the belief she was favored by the Allmother. Stories tell of how this has led to strife within the mortal realm.
